Pre-order and join the waiting list for our calibration-free pH sensor

pH is a critical parameter in multiple processes. From biosensors, to food processing, to drug manufacture, pH needs to be monitored and controlled. For this reason, the pH sensor is one of the most versatile chemosensors. However, current off-the-shelf pH sensors are still geared towards laboratory applications, which limits their widespread use in IoT (Internet of Things) and multiplexing applications. For this reason, at Macias Sensors we have been scratching our brains to revolutionize the field of pH sensing with our calibration-free formulation.

Applications of pH sensors

pH sensors have applications in multiple fields. Below we list a few of the most common ones:

  1. Environmental Monitoring:
    • Water Quality Assessment: pH sensors are used to monitor acidity or alkalinity in natural water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. They help assess pollution levels and environmental impact.
    • Aquaculture: Maintaining the right pH is crucial for fish and shrimp farming. pH sensors ensure optimal conditions for aquatic organisms.
    • Swimming Pools and Spas: pH sensors help maintain safe water quality by regulating chlorine levels and preventing algae growth.
  2. Industrial Processes:
    • Chemical Manufacturing: pH control is essential in chemical reactions. pH sensors are used in production processes for acids, bases, and other chemicals.
    • Food and Beverage Industry: pH measurement ensures product quality and safety. It’s used in brewing, dairy, and soft drink production.
    • Pharmaceuticals: pH monitoring during drug formulation and quality control.
    • Textile Industry: pH control in dyeing and finishing processes.
  3. Biomedical and Research:
    • Laboratories: pH sensors are used in titrations, cell culture, and enzyme assays.
    • Bioreactors: pH monitoring in fermentation processes for biopharmaceuticals and biofuels.
    • Medical Diagnostics: pH measurement in blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, as well as in novel molecular diagnostics such as LAMP.
  4. Agriculture and Soil Management:
    • Crop Growth: pH affects nutrient availability in soil. Sensors help optimize fertilization.
    • Hydroponics and Greenhouses: pH control in soilless cultivation systems.
  5. Wastewater Treatment:
    • pH sensors play a role in neutralization processes and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Challenges with off-the-shelf pH sensors

While off-the-shelf pH sensors do work well for laboratory applications, they can’t be used for multiplexing or implemented in field or in line applications due to the following challenges:

  • They must be calibrated before each use for accurate results, which is time and resource consuming.
  • They suffer from interferences from Tris and chloride
  • They suffer from leakage of internal solution, ionophore and plasticiser which means that:
    • Liquid junction pH sensors need servicing and maintenance of the internal solutions
    • Traditional solid-state pH sensor suffer from sensitivity decay and signal drifts

Features of our calibration-free pH sensor

  • No need to calibrate, just plug and play
  • Compact solid state formulation, no need for bulky glass bodies
  • Ready to multiplex
  • Solvent agnostic
  • Free from chloride interference
  • Cloud enabled via Djuli
